Bears Toothache

cutie pie
This book I really enjoyed, it really sparked my interest. I hope that many people read this book and enjoy it, like I did.

Such fun!
I read to children weekly at Border's Bookstore and they love this book! It is so much fun to read and the children really get involved in the dilemma the boy has: trying to repair the bear's toothache. The portrayal of Dad is hilarious and all too familiar to parents. It is a delightful book your child will not soon forget!

A great companion in the dental clinic
We accompanied Juancho, our two and a half year old kid, to his dentist last week and we chanced upon this great children's book by David M. McPhail aptly titled, "The Bear's Toothache" on the dentist's book shelf.

The book, richly illustrated by the author, is about a boy who cannot not go to sleep. He finds a bear with a toothache outside his window and lets him in. What follows is a hilarious sequence as the boy proceeds to help the bear remove the aching tooth. They raid the refrigerator and knock over a lamp that sends the father to the room to investigate. Still sleepy, Dad doesn't see the bear hiding under the bed. Finally, the bear jumps off the window ledge with a rope tied around the tooth. The scheme is a success and the bear leaves the tooth to the boy for him to keep under his pillow. What a riot.

After reading the book, we laughed aloud with Juancho who by that time was all set for his own adventure with the dentist.

Grandfather buys book for granddaughter & one for himself!
My granddaughter is a scuba diver so I thought she would find this book interesting. The colorful cover caught my eye. After I bought it I read it and sent it to my granddaughter. I liked it so much I bought one for myself. There was a lot of helpful information about Cuba for non-divers. I had been in Cuba as a young man. I am impressed at the wealth of information, maps and charts that were in the book. The photos are fantastic.

Anyone that reads this book will want to dive in Cuba!
I dive at a lot of different locations. I have always had a curiosity about Cuba. I loved the underwater photography as well as the shots of the country and the people. Amy has a way of making the book informative and entertaining. After reading the book I have put Cuba on my TO DO LIST for places to see. It would be great to dive in some of the places in the book that are still unspoiled. I liked the fact that the book was spiral bound and a manageble size to slip in with my dive gear.

Cuba-lots of information, even for non-divers
I loved the gorgeous photos. The research was thorough. It was presented in "no nonsense" language. The charts and maps were easy to understand. I learned a lot about the Cuban culture and the country in addition to the dive information. I am not a diver, but it kept my attention. It was great to see Cuba from the perspective of someone that has acutally been there and experienced the culture. Amy Houghton has a flare for describing things in such a way, you want to go there to see it for yourself. It was great to finally read a book about Cuba that did not have a political agenda.

Very Well Done
This is a fabulous work. The book is large every page is like 2 pages of a regular size book. Great photos on all of the major breeds. The history section in the front is very informative. I read it cover to cover over time and this is the book I refer to when I want to show a breed to a friend.

Every horse lover should own this book!
This is a very beautiful book with lovely photos of horses. You can learn soo much from this book and about all different types of horses. This book also tells about horse sports and how they started to give you more of an understanding. Great for horse lovers.

An incredible artist's reference!
As an illustrator, I have to say that if you're looking for a good photo reference for horses this is perhaps the BEST guide you could ever ask for. The breed section alone is well worth the investment, and the photographs provided are just exquisite.
Once again DK publishing has come through with a gorgeous guide book, and I for one am tremendously grateful they did.

The Ant and the Grasshopper
Published in Paperback by Silver Burdett Pr (January, 1993)
Authors: Houghton Mifflin Company Staff, Houghton Mifflin Company, and Aesop
Average review score:

Great Story
While the ants are hard at work collecting food for the long winter, the grasshopper only plays and does no work at all to prepare for the long harsh winter up ahead. Soon the winter comes and the ants are warm and have plenty of food to eat. However the grasshopper is out in the cold with no food at all. I liked the illustrations in this book, and I also enjoyed the way the author told the moral to the readers. The author's main moral was that there are times when you can play and times when you need to do work, and you can't play all the time. The moral is easily understandable so that children will be able to pick up on it. Also it is a great way in introduce time management to older children

A delightful retelling of a classic story
This retelling of the classic Aesop fable is set in China, at the Emperor's Summer Palace. In this version, as in the classic, the ants work diligently over the summer to prepare for the long winter, when food will be in short supply and the temperature quite cold. The grasshopper, on the other hand, prefers to sing and dance during the long summer days, doing no preparation at all. In the end, the ants are rewaded for their hard work by being warm and full during the winter days, while the grasshopper is left to suffer in the cold. The illustrations were done on rice paper with ink and gouache paint. Not only do they support and enhance the text, but they are truly beautiful works of art. They are a delightful mix of soft, subtle colors and vibrant colors. The rice paper background provides a strong sense of texture and depth. Children ages 4 to 6 will be drawn in by the stunning illustrations, and will learn a valuable lession from the story as a whole.

Beautiful artwork!
I liked this retelling of a classic -- especially in the slight twist - yes, the ants have foresight but they are workaholics and the grasshopper may not be industrious but he appreciats the beauty of a summer night. But it's the elegant illustrations that really catch my eye and highlight this story. Delicate ink strokes with sharp details on rice paper capture the spirit of chinese art and are a wonderful complement to the story's setting. Simply gorgeous and a treat for the eyes. It makes me believe that Aesop should have done this himself!

Excellent Non-fiction
This is the best non-fiction I have ever seen. The liberal use of personal histories and stories along with illustrations from periodicals reporting the situation make this compelling and fascinating.

A haunting history
The potato blight that struck Ireland in the mid 1800s produced a nation-wide famine, resulting in "one million dead and two million who fled" to other countries, predominately the US and Canada. Countless other Irishmen, with no food, money or homes, simply disappeared. Susan Campbell Bartoletti's "Black Potatoes" recreates the era year by year from haunting contemporary newspaper illustrations, government records and first hand survivor stories, told to their children and grandchildren.

Bartoletti provides a balanced account of the economic, political and social repercussions of the blight and the ensuing famine. Food was available but the poor did not have the means to acquire it. The British government was slow to react to the devastation. Irish government officials, landowners, and shopkeepers worked to protect their own interests but, finally, in the end, contributed the greatest amount of financial support to the poor. The Friends Church, operating local soup kitchens, and American relatives, sending millions of dollars in financial support, were allies of the Irish poor during these times.

This book is a wonderful historical recounting of the time and is compelling reading for those of all ages interested in their Irish heritage. Bartoletti brings the horrors of famine and poverty to life. The 150-year old drawings, originally published in the "Illustrated London News", will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. The six-page narrative bibliography is as interesting as the story itself, and provides students and researchers with numerous sources for further study.

An extraordinary book
Susan Campbell Bartoletti, already well known for her award-winning fiction and nonfiction, has reached new heights with this book. It is clearly impeccably researched, yet never reads like a dry compilation of facts. It is by turns moving, horrifying, hopeful, and depressing. Although she points out the general indifference and (often) hostility of some government officials who could have provided some relief, she never falls into the easy trap of making anyone the villain of the terrible story of the Irish potato famine. Instead, she details the general ignorance of the cause of the blight and the sometimes well-meaning but misguided attempts of different people to remedy the situation.

Most importantly, the reader leaves feeling that this is not some strange thing that happened to unknown people a long time ago. The feeling of immediacy, and the way the reader is led to empathize with the sufferers, make it fresh and real.

Readers of "Nory Ryan's Song" who want to get the real history of this terrible time should be encouraged to read "Black Potatoes."

Amy Carmichael of Dohnavur
Published in Hardcover by Christian Literature Crusade (July, 1980)
Author: Frank Houghton
Average review score:

Read THIS biography NOT the Elliot one
This biography of an amazing woman of God is truly food for the soul. In contrast the Elizabeth Elliot biography "A chance to die" seems to have an unconscious negative slant which detracts from this servant of God. This woman was surrendered to the Lord more than anyone else we know of in the 20th century except perhaps Oswald Chambers. We should ask God that we might be used by Him to just a fraction that "Amma" was. The work of Dohnavur still continues to this day.

Inspiring account of a life of service to God and man
This book was my first introduction to Amy Carmichael many years ago. More of her books are in print today, but when I read this book I became acquainted with "Amma's" life of dedication. I also was amazed with the depth of her talent in prose and poetry.

Amy Carmichael left the British Isles to be a missionary in India. She never came home. Dohnavur became her home and the people of India became her people. Her quiet life of service (for many years an invalid) still shines brightly. I can say that this book about Amy Carmichael changed my life.

I highly recommend it as well as other books by her and about her.

Ride With Your Mind: An Illustrated Masterclass in Right Brain Riding
Published in Hardcover by Trafalgar Square (March, 1992)
Authors: Mary Wanless and Kit Houghton
Average review score:

What exactly is "feel"? This book has the answers!
This book is a touch repetitive, and occaisionally new-agey, which could put a lot of horsey people off, but I strongly suggest you persist. If you have "feel" problems this may change your whole perspective! It's also a great source of ideas for teachers with problem pupils, I'd recommend it for teaching people exactly why position does matter.

This book saved me!
I highly recommend Mary Wanless and her teachings. I was at the point of quitting riding. It had become a torture for my horse and myself. I felt that because I wasn't naturally talented I was destined to never progress beyond the point I was at. A friend recommended I read Ride with your Mind: Masterclass after listening to my feelings. It was like a whole new world opened to me within the first few pages. I'm excited about riding again and my horse seems happier with my new attitude. Reading this book was the greatest gift I could have ever given myself and my horse.

An inspiration
This book turned the unknown and terrifying into the wonerful world of riding I know today. It is an easy to read, practical guide that you will not want to let out of your sight, and will want to read and refer to time and time again.

Encyclopedia of Volcanoes
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (October, 1999)
Authors: Haraldur Sigurdsson, Bruce Houghton, Stephen R. McNutt, Haxel Rymer, John Stix, and Hazel Rymer
Average review score:

The state of the science
Great compendium of volcanology. Especially thrilling to an older geologist to see the advances in knowledge since we got out of school; for instance, seismic tomography has mapped actual magma chambers, which were semi-mythic suppositions in my undergrad day; and lo, there is the anatomy of the very volcanoes I grew up under. The book comprises dozens of specially submitted articles by diverse international authors, so you get many perspectives, not just of different disciplines, but of authors' sense of how they relate to others.

Flawed by abundant typos. The editing of this book is a great advance over say The Solar System by the same Academic Press, which was a mangled turnip; but they still have a ways to go. It is disappointing to see major scientific works bungled by bottom line that slashes proofing. NASA is probably largely responsible for the Solar System mess (Sally Ride, take a course in remedial english!). Geologists are a lot more meticulous than astronauts. But the buck shd stop with the publisher.

So buy this book and complain to Academic Press. Buy it before it goes out of print and you have to kick yourself; it will be long before the like comes again.

...from a student's perspective...
I found this text to be incredibly useful, especially considering the noticable dearth of textbooks dealing with volcanoes. The encyclopedia is comprehensible, yet in depth, and covers a broad range of topics. Whenever I have a volcano question I start here first!

EXCELLENT
An excellent book. Written by some of the worlds most renowed experts-one of whom I am fortunate enough to know!
The book is well worth the money as every aspect of volcanology is covered.
I would recommend this book to anyone with a serious intest in volcanology.
